A Mother's Nightmare

I only have the truth to tell you!

I lost a daughter who was very young and I have a son who is ill. He always stood for what is right and helps other people. Bad things are happening in his life as well as mine, but in different ways. This is where I took a leap of faith and decided to do something to make a difference. My son Tony entered into the 2006 election with friends and business associates. He figured this is where he could get the help he and so many others needed. He put it all on the line to fight for justice and truth. The least I could do was to help in any way I could. I worked the phones trying to rally support for the NDP in election 2006. I talked to people about injustice and encouraged them to fight for their rights. I worked many long days and nights for the party. It was a huge success overall. It wasn't until the election was over that the trouble began for me. Then the ensuing attack of bills and phone calls began for me. I received a letter out of nowhere a week after the election. Nova Scotia Government Collections Officer Kevin Northrup began calling me day and night. I was becoming distraught. Mr. Northrup finally explained that the Department of Community Services was claiming

I had to repay them Canada Pension Disability Income from many years ago in 1992. I told him I didn't received my Canada Pension until 1995 and there was a serious mistake. I called the telephone number on the letters, and they referred me back to the Liverpool Social Services office. The information and name they were using for me was all wrong. I called Social Services in Halifax and they told me they had no record of any this and that it was all coming out of the Liverpool Office!

I called my new MLA Vicki Conrad , for whom I worked so hard to get elected. I was a worker for her campaign and served as a Candidate's Poll Representative on Election Day for her, so I believed she would help me. All I wanted was a voice to help guide me in the right direction. She never returned my calls. I realized that my son and I were on our own. No one kept their promises to help and there was no justice to be found! I prayed for an answer. I even contacted the Social Services ombudsman, Monica McKinnon, and she was unable to help me. There was neither reasonability nor any help for me. I prayed night after night to God that help would come to my son and his friends and myself. After two years the fight still continues, and still no answers in sight.

This is one of the worst situations my family and I ever had to face. I lived in Nova Scotia all my life. To think you cannot be allowed to take part in an election as a Nova Scotia citizen without being bullied and punished for making the choice of whom you want to support is outrageous! What happened to freedom of choice? I am an old woman and I know right from wrong! I have been learning with my son since this election the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but for us here in Nova Scotia rights and freedoms don't exist. I worry about all the children that have to grow up in a world that offers them no hope. I am so sad to see this happening to our good people.

My son and his friends recently decided to build a website. He said, "Mom, I have to try to get help from outside of Nova Scotia!" The website is our way to tell the truth to the rest of Canada! The local and provincial media will not report it. I decided if my son is going to tell the truth the least I can do is stand up as a mother and help my son and his friends. I was given a miracle, for my son's health improves and he wants to stand up for the people and do what is right! Our faith has grown together and this led me to have the courage to stand up for what I believe.

All this happened just because I tried to make our community a better place! I have cried many tears and been down on my knees praying to my Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ for good people to stand up and fight for our Rights and Freedoms and Justice. I pray that the bullies will stop hurting us and be ashamed for their actions. As a mother I cry to the Canadian people to please help us. We only have the truth to tell you! I am one older lady who taking a step of faith for Justice and Fairness in her community!

God Bless you all,  Barb Murphy

Mother Murphy Statement

On February 3, 2010, a mediator who had spoken with Vicki Conrad, MLA, brought Vicki and myself together. Vicki came to my home, led by her secretary.

We sat down and talked, and I displayed the papers from 2006 to date, proving how I was being harassed. Vicki made copies of all the papers. She called me a couple of days later and promised to take up my predicament with the Minister of Social Services, and would “sort this all out.” She made a promise to write me a letter, which never came.

Now that Vicki Conrad had all the facts, and now that she had discussed the issues with me in person, I tried to take comfort in her statement that she would try to end my harassment.

As of today, April 10, 2010, I have heard absolutely nothing further from her, and I have lost all confidence in Vicki Conrad. I want nothing further to do with her, and I will work for a public investigation into the wrongs done to me and to my son Tony Anderson and his business associates.

Freedom of speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under international law through numerous human rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, although implementation remains lacking in many countries. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes preferred, since the right is not confined to verbal speech but is understood to protect any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.
